Oh, what a night. Marc Jacobs celebrated his marriage to Char Defrancesco on April 6 surrounded by his nearest and dearest and fashion family at Manhattan’s The Grill. Guests including Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and contributing editors Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell joined Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Chloë Sevigny, Emily Ratajkowski, Luka Sabbbat, Frank Ocean and Lil’ Kim to pose with props (Trombones! Poodles! Lips!) and watch the couple cut a five-tiered cake in a theatrical cutting ceremony led by a dance troupe. After that proposal at a Chipotle, in which he orchestrated a Prince flashmob for his partner, Jacobs could hardly do things by halves, could he?

Each attendee on the guest list, which also included fellow designers Kim Jones, Phoebe Philo and Humberto Leon, left with a “lousy sweatshirt” embroidered with with two cuddling otters and the words “don’t float away”. The card that accompanied it read: “An xtra-large thank you to all of our friends and extended family for being with us and making this special evening so extra-ordinary”. Naturally, the hashtag #dontfloataway started to filter down Insta feeds.

Jacobs took to his own Instagram throughout the day to share details of his nuptials with his 1.1 million followers. The first hint that his outfit would be fabulous came via a line-up of custom Gucci boots and ties. “Choices,” read the caption. “A gurl always needs options. Thank you for the most 🔥boots ever Alessandro Michele”. The second came courtesy of a tiny art deco diamond and onyx penguin pinned to his suit. The aquatic bird was a gift from Fabio Zambernardi, the design director of Prada and Miu Miu, it transpired, as a reminder that penguins mate for life. “A great example of faithfulness and fidelity,” said Jacobs. The outfits! The grooms both wore Huntsman suits, which were designed by Fitzgerald, who Jacobs said has always “come through” for the couple. While Jacobs danced the night away in his lemon-hued Guccis, Defrancesco plumped for a pair of bespoke Christian Louboutin trainers. Aside from their matching penguins, they each had a calla lily pinned to the lapel of their jackets (Jacobs’s black, Defrancesco’s green velvet).View this post on Instagram
The guests’ attire was no less fabulous. Many, of course, wore Marc Jacobs. Some wore current season (Katie Grand chose a voluminous black-and-white polka dot confection worn by Tracee Ellis Ross just one week ago). And others, including Amber Valletta, wore vintage Marc Jacobs that took the New York Fashion Week star down memory lane.View this post on Instagram
